Email automations

Emails that go out on their own, like abandoned checkout.

Open in dashboard

Email automations send emails on their own, like a reminder when a shopper leaves checkout. Go to Marketing > Email automations.

Add an automation#

  1. Select Add automation

  2. Pick one from the list and select Add. Its emails are written and ready.

  3. Open it to edit the emails, then turn it on.

Each store can have one of each automation.

Abandoned checkout#

Brings shoppers back a day after they leave checkout. The email links straight back to their cart.

  • It checks with Shopify just before sending. If the shopper bought in the meantime, nothing is sent.
  • It needs checkout access in Shopify. If you see Recover abandoned checkouts, select Enable and reconnect your store.

Review requests#

Asks customers for a review after their order ships, with store credit as a thank you. See Review requests.

Edit emails#

Open an automation to see its Sequence.

  • Send delay: how many days after the event, or after the email before.
  • Subject line and Email: write your own, or open the email designer.
  • Insert fields like Store name, Order number, Product name or Checkout link. They're filled in for each customer.
  • Turn one email off to skip it.

Select Add email to add a follow up. Growth allows 3 emails per automation. Pro has no limit.

Send a test#

Select Send test to email yourself the last saved version. Save your changes first. Test emails use sample data, like order #1001.

Who gets emails#

  • Marketing consent. Review requests, cross-sell, winback and abandoned checkout only go to customers who accepted marketing emails in Shopify.
  • Welcome series goes to people who signed up in the chat and confirmed their email.
  • Back in stock goes to shoppers who asked to be told, so no marketing consent is needed.
  • Unsubscribe. Every email has an unsubscribe link. It stops all automated emails from that store to that address.
  • Bounces and spam reports stop emails to that address automatically.

To stop emails to one customer, use the switch in Contacts, or Don't send in an automation's Scheduled tab.

Quiet hours#

Automated emails aren't sent between 9pm and 8am. An email due overnight goes out from 8am. The welcome email right after a signup is sent straight away.

One email a day#

Each shopper gets at most one automation email a day, so a cart reminder, a review request and a cross-sell never land on the same day.

When two are due on the same day, the first one in this list goes:

  1. Abandoned checkout

  2. Back in stock

  3. Review request

  4. Post-purchase cross-sell

  5. Follow-up emails you added after a review request

  6. Customer winback

  7. Welcome series

  • The others wait. They're never skipped. Each goes on a later day, and the emails after it in the same automation move back with it.
  • In Activity, a waiting email shows its new time and Waiting: another email went today.
  • Not counted: the welcome email right after a signup always goes straight away. Order emails, store credit codes and your team's replies don't count either.

It's on by default. To turn it off, use the Space out emails switch at the bottom of the Timeline card.

Timeline#

The Timeline card, above your automations, shows when each automation's emails go out, from what starts them:

  • Order ships: review requests, cross-sell and winback.
  • Cart left: abandoned checkout.
  • Signs up: welcome series.
  • Back in stock: back in stock emails.

Each email shows its automation and subject on its day, like Same day or Day 3. With Space out emails on, an email due the same day as another in its row shows Moves to the next day. Select an email to open its automation. Only automations that are on are shown.

Track results#

Each automation shows Emails sent, Opened, Shoppers who ordered and Revenue from their orders for the last 30 days. Activity lists what was sent and what's scheduled.

Turn off or remove#

Select Turn off to stop all emails in an automation. Remove deletes it and your edits. You can add it again any time.
