Rewards is your own loyalty program: customers earn points or cashback on every paid order in your store, not only orders from the chat. Go to **Marketing > Rewards**, or **Rewards** in the app's menu in Shopify admin.

> [!NOTE]
> Rewards is on Growth and Pro, and is rolling out store by store. If it isn't in your menu yet, it isn't on for your store. On Free, balances are kept but nothing is earned or redeemed.

## Choose points or cashback

- **Points**: customers earn points per amount spent, then redeem them for a one-time discount code. Example: a $50 order earns 50 points, and 500 points = $5 off.
- **Cashback**: customers get a share of each order back as Shopify store credit, used at checkout. Cashback needs your approval for store credit in Shopify (select **Approve** in **Settings**), and new customer accounts with store credit turned on in Shopify. Store credit is spent in your store's currency.

The type is fixed once customers have rewards, so balances stay correct. Contact support to change it.

## What earns

- Paid orders with a customer, guest checkouts included. Shoppers sign in to their account to see and use their rewards.
- Line items after discounts. Gift cards, tips, shipping and taxes don't count, unless you turn on **Count shipping** or **Count taxes**.
- Only orders paid after you turned the program on, by the rules in force when they were paid. A rules change applies to later orders only.
- A sign-up bonus is for new customer accounts only (not guest checkouts or imports). It's added with their first paid order and is pending with it; if that order is refunded in full, it waits for the next one.
- Test orders never earn. Amounts are in your store's currency and rounded down.

Rewards stay **pending** for the days you set (14 by default, at least 7, so refunds can take back rewards first), then become available. A refund takes back rewards in proportion; a full refund or cancellation takes them all. If the rewards were already used, the balance can go below zero: the customer can't redeem until it's back above zero. Nobody is ever charged.

In cashback mode, part of an order paid with store credit doesn't earn. Store credit taken back after a refund never goes below the customer's balance; what couldn't be taken back shows on the customer.

## How shoppers redeem points

- **Cart**: the Rewards block on the cart page, or the Rewards embed in a slide-out cart, shows their balance and a **Use my rewards** toggle. Turning it on adds a code to the cart; turning it off removes it, and the points come back within about 15 minutes (time to make sure no order used the code).
- **Checkout** (Shopify Plus): the Rewards block under the discount field does the same.
- **Chat**: the assistant shows a signed-in shopper's balance and can give them their code.

Each code is for that customer's account only, works once, and expires after 72 hours; unused points come back. A code can't be combined with other order or product discounts; if Shopify won't apply it next to another discount, the toggle turns off and says so. A reward covers at most the share of the cart you set (50% by default), so a code works on carts of at least that size. Shopify converts codes for shoppers paying in another currency.

## Set it up

1. **Settings**: pick points or cashback, set your rules and your terms, turn on **Rewards on**, and select **Save**. The examples under each rule show what a customer gets.
2. **Setup**: select **Open theme editor** to add the Rewards block to your cart page, and turn on the embed if your theme has a slide-out cart.
3. On Shopify Plus, add the Rewards block in **Settings > Checkout > Customize**.

If Smile.io is connected, run one program at a time. While Rewards is on, the chat uses it.

## Customers and adjustments

**Customers** lists everyone with rewards: available, pending, lifetime earned and last activity. Select a customer for their full history. The store owner can add or take rewards by hand with a reason; it's never below zero and shows in **Settings > Activity** with who made it. Team members can look, not change.

## Your terms

You run your rewards program and set its terms. **Your rewards terms** in **Settings** start with a default you can edit; shoppers see them. Rewards are applied as Shopify discount codes or store credit. When a store is paused, uninstalled, on Free or the program is off, nothing new is earned or redeemed; codes already given still work until they expire, and balances are kept.

Rewards data is stored and deleted with your customers' data: a customer's redaction request from Shopify deletes their rewards too.
